One way authors create mood is vocabulary (choice of words)
Authors choose words with the connot ations to create a particular impression. Instead of touch an author may choose any of these words to show what sort of touch it was: hug, peck, punch, thump...
Some words have positive connotations, others have negative connotations, while others are quite neutral. (Compare these: racist / racial; alone / lonely; result / consequence; reason / excuse.)
Words which create a strong feeling are called “emotive”. (Compare broken / shattered, hit / thumped....)
Vivid” words are interesting words with strong connotations. (Compare hurtle / move, hurl / throw.)
